In our tutorial today we will talk about lightning. We will create the lightning by adjusting and modifying some image properties. We will not use any plug in to create the lightning, just some simple steps with simple Photoshop tricks.
Now, let’s use the sample image on our “My Pictures” folder. It’s the Blue Hills.jpg. We will add a lightning on it so it will be a hill with a lightning on the sky.

As I mentioned before, we won’t use any plug in, so the first tool we use will be the gradient tool. Don’t forget to set the foreground and background color to black and white.

Drag our mouse pointer horizontal to create our black to white gradient on the new layer.

Then, use the “Difference Clouds” effect to create the basic lightning line. You can use it from Filter è Render è Difference Clouds. Undo and redo the difference clouds effect until you get some basic line of nice lightning as showed below.

Invert the image by click on Image è Adjustments è Invert. Then make the lightning line get stronger effect by adjusting its level.

Now we already have our lightning layer on our blue hills layer. To make it combined well, set our “Lightning” layer blending mode as “Screen”. It will make means the dark area will be disappears.

For the final touch… erase the unnecessary lightning line and we get the blue hills with a lightning on the top of the hill. Use your brush, eraser and other tools to make the lightning better and more real.
